Enhancing pump station efficiency with non-intrusive flow measurement

To preserve and manage a precious coastal underground water area in Australia, the local water authority has developed unique mechanisms to supply river water directly to irrigators and continue to improve and conserve groundwater. At pump stations, surface water is pumped from the local river and supplied to farmers. To reduce the overall consumption at the pump stations, one of the plants underwent an upgrade project which entailed the installation of the pumps with variable speed drives (VSDs) and clamp-on flow meters on the rising mains. The operators investigated methods to retrofit old pipes with reliable and accurate measuring instrumentation. Flow measurement would need to be possible even on old pipes which were buried for the most part and only partially accessible.
